Notes from the Flower Farm

A Warm welcome to you all. My Flower Friend Community has been growing healthily over the last couple of seasons and my aim for the newsletter is to keep you all well informed about whats happening at the flower farm.

I write this sitting in an hotel in Bath on the hottest late May bank holiday on record. I am hoping my newly planted seedlings at home are not being scorched to a crisp! Bath is as ever elegantly beautiful and along with Seville is right at the top of my go to destinations.

Chelsea flower show has been and gone and I am proud to be part of ‘Flowers from The Farm’ which was showcased extensively throughout the Show. The television coverage was extensive emphasising the industries newly acquired SIC Code. A great step forward for governmental recognition of the flower farming industry in the UK. This importantly ensures this burgeoning industry can be tracked and its value to the economy recorded.

The dahlias are finally beginning to emerge this week, although they’ve been greeted by some very unexpected mid-May weather. Mornings have started with scraping ice off the windscreen, followed by applying factor 50 by lunchtime and ending the day with the heating back on again!

Sunday Flowers Launch

This will make you chuckle.

After someone let slip (reported us) to the council that we had served a couple of cups of tea and cake on a few Sunday mornings last year we had a visit from an absolutely lovely lady from HDC who has awarded us with a 5 star food hygiene rating. 

After my initial 🙄 at having been reported and my total admission of guilt to having sold about 5 cups of tea on a few Sundays last year, I was so delighted to have been awarded the rating and it gave me a massive confidence boost in what I am trying achieve.

Slinfold is the most wonderful Community and I am an advocate for doing things properly but last year was a trial and we were never sure if we could carry on with Sunday flowers and its tea and cake facility.

But now we are more confident and determined than ever and, although whoever reported us was not wrong, it is a shame they didn’t just come and chatted to us first.

Sunday Flowers will run every Sunday through to the autumn.

Whats looking good in the Flower Field……

The early summer flowering perennials are now providing a strong and reliable supply for all of my bunches. At the moment these include Knautia macedonica, Sweet William, cornflowers, achillea, oxeye daisies and alliums.

If my arm were twisted to purchase any early flowering perennial I think it would be Geums. They’re incredibly reliable, easy to grow and flower in the most vibrant colours.

Summer Highlights

25th & 26th July 2026 - Summer Retreat

(Non-Residential)

A two-day retreat focused on floral and willow making. A chance to fully immerse yourself in creativity, spend time outdoors and learn new skills in a relaxed and welcoming setting.

13th September 2026 - Annual Open Day

Open to all, with space to explore, eat, drink and take in the late summer flowers. Whether you’ve visited before or it’s your first time, this is a lovely way to experience the farm at its peak.
